Trial and Error

Today, out of boredom at home, I tried making onde-onde to go with the evening tea. No kelapa parut muda, I persuaded my little brother to cycle to the grocery shop nearby to buy; no pandan leaves, I have to literally crawl down a steep hill in my backyard to get them; no gula Melaka, coarse brown sugar will do; no green colouring, blue the colour shall be. When all the ingredients are assembled, using the memory I had I started mixing and kneading the dough, put enough sweetness into each one and boiled until they are cooked. Voila! It’s done.

Of course when everything went on a little bit too smoothly for me in the kitchen, something fishy must be going on. When my mother took a bite, she paused for a while then turned around and asked me, “Amy guna tepung apa?” I replied, “Tepung beras. Nape?” My mother burst into laughter and said, “Hei, mana ada orang buat onde-onde dengan tepung beras! Tepung pulut la. Keras kedengkung kuihnya. Tu la, buat tak tanya mak dulu.”

See? I told you.

Photo Shooting

A little bird told me of an interesting event happening in Putrajaya this weekend. 1Malaysia International Dragon Boat Festival 2010 (Click here for more info). Fascinating! This is the best opportunity for me to learn and improve my photography skills. Maybe I can stay until dark and take some night view photos of Putrajaya. It’s been in my mind for a while now, just don’t have any reason to go for it. Security issue is also one of the discouraging reasons. Anak dara tak elok keluar malam-malam, so my mom said.

So hopefully everything will go on as planned. *fingers crossed*

Flowers are Red, Green Leaves are Green.

Just a song I want to share with you that has some sort of life lesson in its lyrics. “Flowers Are Red” is originally sang by late Harry Chapin, and this is a nausheed(nasyid) version by Zain Bhikha. Personally, I adore the nausheed one. After listening to it for the first time, I just can’t get it out of my head. I kept singing and humming it over and over again for days, as if that is the only song I knew. So, for that I think it’s worth sharing. Enjoy.

Flowers Are Red

A little boy went first day at school
He got some crayons and he started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
The teacher said, "What you doin' young man?"
"I'm paintin' flowers. See?"
"Well this is not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There's a time for everything young man
A way it should be done
You've got to show concern for everyone else
For you're not the only one"
And she said...
"Flowers are red
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen "
But the little boy said...
"There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one"
Well the teacher said "You're sassy
There's a way that things should be
And you'll paint flowers the way they are
So repeat after me..."
she said...

"Flowers are red
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen "
But the little boy said again...
"There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one"
Well the teacher put him in a corner
She said "It's for your own good
And you won't come out 'til you get it right
responding like you should"
Well finally he got lonely
Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to that teacher
And this is what he said
"Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen"

Well time went by like it always does
he moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
The teacher there was smilin'
She said..."Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
So let's paint every one"
that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him "why"

This is what he said..
"Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen."
But there must still be a way to have our children say,
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one
